Events2go – PICNIC: Three days of ideas, fun and sensory stimulation

The countdown is on for PICNIC09: There are still 67 days to go until the fourth edition of PICNIC will take place on September 23-25, 2009 at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. This year’s event will be focusing on new media, mobile technologies and the changes produced by the clash of the old and new world.

PICNIC is a festival with a cutting edge conference program featuring keynotes, interactive experiences and matchmaking sessions designed to evoke an emotional reaction through "quirky surprises". The PICNIC09 speaker line-up features amongst others Philip Zimbardo, Niklas Zennström, Gerd Leonhard, Tomi Ahonen and Jeff Jarvis.

PICNIC09 will be featuring two big competitions: The Green Challenge, a global competition for the most innovative products or services that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the Vodafone Mobile Clicks finale, awarding 150,000 Euros to the most innovative mobile applications. The Five Most Promising Dutch Startups

There are plenty of hot and innovative technology startups in the Netherlands – for us Mynameise, kimengi, IRL connect, Nulaz and mobypicture are the five most promising ones. Amsterdam-based cloud service Mynameise.com allows you to manage and share multiple identities and enables you to make an online ‘business card’ for every occasion. Founded by Renato Valdés Olmos, E provides its users with a selection of tools to connect, amongst them a highly compatible connector which stores around 265 contacts. Kimengi.com - founded by Lucien Burm – is a free service for blogs providing a widget based recommendation technology called f»dforward. The f»dforward widget helps you grow your blog network and stay in touch with your audience by offering insight into what other subjects your readers are interested in. Other than content-focussed Zemanta, blogs work together in the f»dforward network and the widget can be used on any other blog to connect with them.

In Real Life (IRL) is the only presence-based social networking company. Founder and CEO Frank Schuil created a web-centered visual social network that allows you to see on Google Maps what your friends from all your social networks and social media are doing and enables you to interact with them. The company’s first product IRL Connect can also be applied to the business environment. Last week at the Benelux Venture Forum in Ghent, IRL was selected as one of the most promising startups. Zemanta.com offers a very promising browser based tool for bloggers to help them to enrich their content. I've tried it after the interview at the picnic conference a few weeks ago and I like it a lot, but I see also space for improvements which are necessary to really make it an indispensable application. Lucky me that I met Andraz Tori, co-founder of Zemanta, at the facebook developer garage in Berlin. So I could ask him about all it.

Second Life: better than the real world? – Philip Rosedale @ picnic

At the PICNIC conference, Jure Cuhalev presented zemanta a helpful tool for bloggers to enrich their articles with more content, like links to related posts, pictures or tag suggestions. It works on your backend and suggests related web material based on what you write. Learn more about zemanta by watching the following video:
logo zemanta The pros and cons of zemanta have been widely discussed in the blogosphere. As the discussion about zemanta is quite controvers, I decided to try it out myself, fascinated by the idea that it could make blogging even easier. My first impressions about the tool go in line with the thoughts of the other bloggers linked to above.
    Here are some of my pros:
  • Making tags-adding easy and getting new suggestions for possible tags.
  • With a growing database would be a rich resource for additional content.
  • Beeing able to easily create backlinks by personalizing the resources with feeds from do-follow-blogs.
  • Can be helpful for SEO and SEM.
    Here are some of my cons:
  • Inserting an image is not as easy as it could be, because it goes always on the top and not to the point where you want it by pointing the cursor.
  • The related links offered are mainly links to wordpress, which is completely un-useful at least for me.
  • The related articles provided are quit old and mostly do not fit to the content.
  • The pictures provided have to be filtered to get at least somehow useful results, but even though there is just a small number of resources.
So my impression till now: zemanta could become a very useful and powerful tool helping bloggers creating and spreading content faster - but it is not yet.
