From now on there’s a little angel that helps conference hoppers manage changes in complex schedules of paper presentations and sessions. The little magic being is called Con’Angel and can be downloaded for free at the iPhone App store. Manuel Gruber and Raphael Haase have developed and designed the conference planning program that is right now only available for iPhones. In the near future, the mobile application will also be offered for BlackBerry smart phones as well as for Vodafone's phones. Manuel who plans to go international with his product says: „We sell Con’Angel as a white label solution to conference, festival and event organizers. Not everybody likes to publish shopping actions, but some apparently do have fun displaying their favorite products, brands and wishlists. Social shopping service Shopotainment therefore creates your personal shopping window. The shopping platform integrates into Facebook and other social networks and allows you to see your friends’ products and the shops where they bought them. Shopotainment strives to create interaction about the likes and dislikes of costumers, as co-founders Adrian Hass and Sebastian Kurt say. Based on your profile, individual shopping recommendations are offered. As Adrian explains, Shopotainment is based on an affiliate model: „Products and brands that are shown in the network are from our affiliate partners. We are paid per transaction – either per click or per order.“ For Adrian, affiliate marketing is the way to go in times of crisis: „If you still got marketing, this is definitely the smartest way to invest your money.“ In 2009, the Shopotainment platform will be further improved to make it as stable and open as possible. To boost sales and revenue and to fight competitors like Stylight or Stylefruits, the Berlin-based startup is still looking for either a shop or marketing partner - or a partner in social networks with social shopping features within their platform. Men are not only from Mars and women from Venus, but the genders are also really different in doing business. That’s at least what Kerstin Schilling, CEO of cash bonus program AdiCash and co-founder of Intershop Communications, thinks: „Like in nature women are ‚the grey ones’, those who are doing the job behind it. They are better in investments because they are more focussed on output.“ Kerstin founded eCommerce pioneer Intershop together with Stephan Schambach and her twin brother Karsten Schneider shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall. She recounts: „It’s best to start really free as an entrepreneur. At the start of the New Economy we were in a good position, started with new knowledge and couldn’t loose anything.“ More than 15 years later, she is convinced that running a business with a sibling creates great value: „You can trust the other, have no fear of saying the wrong things and although it sometimes gets very emotional you know better than anyone else what’s behind it. With competition more being between networks than between companies, a network in your family is a good thing to have.“ While Kerstin and her twin invest in other companies and found new startups, she points out that they primarily invest in people: „We are both very open minded and like to get in contact with independent people – people with sometimes crazy ideas who like to do something before they ask for money.“ Kerstin and Karsten are involved in startups like GreenApo, Uniturm and FORMBLITZ, just to mention a few. Here they come, all the cool and exciting new startups Viktoria discovered at webinale Berlin: Firstly, we’ll introduce Vienna-based gnowsis.com, a project for forgetful people;) Gnowis is still in the prefounding phase and about half a year away from a public prototype. Project coordinator Leo Sauermann merged Personal Information Management with Semantic Web technologies to build a Semantic Desktop - a Desktop Computer enhanced with Semantic Desktop technologies. Leo, who’s a researcher at the Knowledge Management Lab of German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) explains: „ On a modern personal computer there are many little data silos – emails, files and documents. While for many people it’s a burden, it’s a treasure for us. We connect all these silos and store the connections on your desktop through the use of Semantic Web technologies. In the end, gnowsis will be the perfect personal information management software.“ Although Leo says they need more time to finish the product, he still unveils it for you in a little presentation. For the normal enduser, gnowsis will be sold as a downloadable software that integrates into common applications. Companies get a groupware server where they can communicate within their organization. The goals for 2009, Leo says, are to found the company and to have the product available so that people can buy it. Apart from that he remains humble: „Everybody wants to conquer the world, we just want to make our costumers happy...we will do lots of interviews and grow with the product.“ Further interviews from webinale will be posted here in the coming days.
