The Five Most Promising Nordic Startups

What’s hot in the cooler Northern European regions? Today’s edition of „The Top 5 Nordic Startups" includes ViaEuropa, CAMPFIRE A/S, HammerKit, XIHA Life and Scred.

ViaEuropa is the world’s leading Open Service Exchange Operator of Broadband networks. Based on the southern tip of Sweden, ViaEuropa is proving that next generation broadband infrastructure is best built by an Open Service Market Economy. It is therefore not astonishing that CEO Jonas Birgersson is one of the most hated people in the Telecom sector since many years...

Young adults are the primary target group of Copenhagen-based CAMPFIRE A/S: The global future company owns the brand Catooz - an interactive comic book brought to mobile phones. The above pitch with CEO and founder Glenn Lau Rentius is from Le Mobile 2.0 where the company won the Zapping 2009 award.

You can think of Finnish company HammerKit as the IKEA of the web: The HammerKit application assembly platform allows to build complex web applications without the need to know how to program code. Look out for sneek peeks of Version 4.0 in the coming weeks! To learn more about the web service development platform watch Managing Director Mark Sorsa-Leslie describing HammerKit in this pitch from Plugg conference.

XIHA Life, the world's leading multilingual social network last week launched a second-generation version of its platform. XIHA – co-founded by Jani Penttinen - allows you to communicate with your friends in not only one, but several different languages. The launch of XIHA Life 2.0 begins a wave of new feature announcements. Founded by Kristoffer Lawson, Scred is a Finnish company building tools and services to help friends, groups and communities simplify their money management, wherever they are. Scred’s cost balancing tool is great for less formal groups like bands, code crews, indie film producers and developers as well as trip organizers.

Next Monday’s edition of "The Top 5" is all about inspiration: Tiburon-TV introduces five great authors and their inspiring books.

The Five Most Promising Portuguese Startups

Most of you probably know that Portugal is an ideal sunshine get-away from cold northern European weather, but are you aware of the exciting tech startups that have recently been founded in the country of seafarers? Tiburon-TV introduces you to the five most promising ones among them: Adegga, handivi, Tarpipe, The Star Tracker and stream19. Social networks and networking tools like Social Wine Discovery service Adegga.com are having quite an impact on the wine industry: Adegga lets you track the wines you are drinking and share your wine discoveries with the community. You can also access the service using your mobile while visiting a wine shop, see what other people think about a wine and check wine prices on other shops. Adegga has been co-founded by Lisbon entrepreneur André Ribeirinho.

For those of you who speak Portuguese - here’s Viktoria interviewing André in this poetic language. There’s also a mini video with a live wine tasting of André’s wines. Not only for youngsters: Mobile network service handivi.com allows you to do everything you can do with a web based social network service – socializing with friends, sharing pictures, videos and messages. Learn more about the meta mobile network by watching Viktoria’s interview with „hippie nerd developer“ Celso Pinto and „wannabee marketeer“ Vitor Domingos ;) If you use different social media applications like Flickr, Twitter, Delicious, FriendFeed etc., Tarpipe.com comes in really handy. The publishing platform simplifies your social media workflow and makes it easy to share content across various sites through an intuitive, Yahoo Pipes-like interface. Bruno Pedro is the co-founder of this great social media startup. The Star Tracker is all about connecting global Portuguese talent. The invitation-only social network aims to energize and empower the Portuguese diaspora of around 5 million people. Founder Leonardo Xavier believes that „everybody has talent“ and „we are what we are because of our talent and not because of our experience.“ Finally, a cool website catering to all action sports lovers: Social network Stream19.com – founded by Sergio Veiga - provides a forum for action sports athletes to showcase their videos, events, and friends. Stream19 also hosts a contest for talented kids – the so called “king of the spot” will become sponsored by a company.

The Five Most Promising Swiss Startups

Part Two of Tiburon-TV's new series "The Top 5" covers the five most promising Swiss startups: Amazee, Poken, smaboo, Cassiber and smeepe. Dania Gerhardt is one of the three co-founders of social collaboration platform Amazee.com who has lately been under attack: Amazon.com has targeted the platform for collective action with trademark claims and is demanding Amazee be removed from the Swiss trade mark register. Believe it or not, you can win a hefty Amazon gift certificate if you support Amazee in this case by adding the project to Facebook. Click here to watch Viktoria's interview with Amazee's CEO Gregory Gerhardt. Forget about paper business cards: Stéphane Doutriaux - founder and CEO at Lausanne-based Poken.com - set a new trend in the Social Networking space by developing a digital business card as a fashion accessory. Pokens are little plastic creatures that manage your e-life via RFID and enable you to be connected at all the networks at once. Any company with an already strong brand can use smaboo.com’s ambassador marketing campaigns to broaden its target market. The Swiss-German startup recruits the right people for them, generates the content in the online and offline world thereby creating word of mouth effects. As co-founder and CTO Adrian Locher proudly mentions, smaboo’s client list is quite impressive: Microsoft, Debitel and Facebook Germany. Trying to remember the idea you had yesterday? On Cassiber.com you can free your thoughts from your mind as well as save and share it with your team and your organization. The young startup is all about idea and innovation management and truly Swiss: CEO and co-founder Rico Wyder points out that Cassiber’s software is developed 100% in Switzerland - office, infrastructure and major clients are also located in the „Land of the Alps“. The two founders of online portal smeepe.net - Danielle Grossi and Sonya Perry – were sick of a problem they faced almost every day: „Where do we find vendors for our projects and how do we know they are of good quality and suit our needs?“ So it is smeepe’s mission to match users to the most suitable vendors they need for their project worldwide. Users can search for vendors in multiple locations, then view, contact, rate and comment. Right now, event and IT/Social Media vendors can register and also use the platform to market themselves.
