Matt Biddulph – Dopplr/Nokia: Change the world from Europe

Another Web 2.0 Expo New York speaker is Matt Biddulph, CTO of UK startup Dopplr (that recently has been acquired by Nokia). Tiburon-TV’s Viktoria interviewed the mobile social location expert on trends in mobile and applications.

„We’re seeing better and better datasets - a lot of tools for developers to build things with“ explains Matt. „Also, the devices and what you can do with them is expanding. There are phones with compasses and GPS and we’re playing with augmented reality. The phone is becoming something that is not just a communication device but part of your social life.“

According to Matt, the next big thing could well come from a small startup. „A downturn is a great time to start a startup. It’s a time to be daring and make a new company on no money“ Matt says. His tip is: „ Get outside the valley bubble, start a company in a little low-rent East Berlin back office and change the world from Europe!“

Here’s Viktoria’s interview with Matt from Mobile Dev Camp Amsterdam. More interviews from Web 2.0 Expo New York can be found here.

“I started with failing” serial entrepreneur Taneli Tikka @ SLUSH

How does the Finish startup scene look like? The best way to find out is by speaking with one of its most active players, Taneli Tikka. Over the last ten years he founded 4 businesses himself, funded 10, became a board member of 13 (such as muxlim), was the CEO or COO of 7 (such as dopplr), managed 10 rounds of financing for a value of 15 Mill, sold three companies (one for 12,5 Mill in shares) and bought 1. Taneli Tikka is most known for IRC-Galleria, a very active social network which includes more than 70% of the Finish youth. His newest engagement is RunToShop, a product recommendation system. At his blog tane.li, he describes himself as a "serial entrepreneur and dealmaker with an active history of allround leadership and strategy work. Plus a reasonably laid-back yet opinionated dude." There he writes about startups of cause but especially about war stories, tabus, success and failure cases. To learn more about the Finish startup scene, just follow him on his blog. A lot of numbers and informations... besides that, Taneli always looks for great new investment oportunities.
