Matthias Hornberger – kizoo: An Investor’s View (presentation) @ Mobile Monday Berlin

In the last presentation from Mobile Monday Berlin, Venture Capitalist Matthias Hornberger from kizoo shares his view on the business potential of LBS: „I saw great applications and use cases tonight but I’m not sure I saw significant business models which justify a single or double digit VC investment. With 60.000 applications in the App Store, the competition to build a standalone business around a single application is just tremendous. It probably takes us a few more years to find LBS business models that really work.“

Whereas Matthias believes in the future of Location Based Mobile Dating, he’s sceptical about Family Locators and Couponing: „I think it’s a trap to transfer businesses that work in Korea, Japan or the US to the European market.“

Information about price and product is then delivered directly to the phone. Furthermore, you can search for products and shops. The basic idea is to scan a product and then to ask woabi to show you other shops offering this item in a radius of 500 meters including price comparisons.“ The new woabi iPhone application can be downloaded for free in the App Store.

Johannes Martens – Aloqa: From Local Search to Serendipity (presentation) @ Mobile Monday Berlin

In his talk at Mobile Monday Berlin, Aloqa’s co-founder Johannes Martens shares his experience on what went wrong in the last ten years of LBS: „From a technical perspective it’s location pull vs. push; local search vs. discovery. We’re trying to end up with real serendipity discovering things we would have never thought about. Instead of static content we want dynamic content, simply because life is dynamic.“ Aloqa’s cross-platform application has an open API and is for free! The service provides context-specific recommendations with dynamic data based on a channel concept – users can create the channels they like. And by the way, the Munich-based startup is still looking for content partners and publishers interested in publishing their content in Aloqa’s system... Martin Ramsin – Nokia: A New Kind of App (presentation) @ Mobile Monday Berlin

It’s been only two weeks since Nokia has unveiled the beta SDK for the Ovi app platform at Nokia World 09: „We feel that Ovi apps are more relevant than most of the apps out there“ says Martin Ramsin, Product Manager at Nokia in the social location team Berlin. Martin feels truly excited about these kind of apps and what they can do: „They present relevant information that is very closed to you using location as a filter. Maps and navigation help you then to go to the place in the real world. Lots of Ovi features and services will be added throughout the year.“ According to Martin, Ovi apps will democratize the application development: Since they are based on web technology, anybody with web technology knowledge can create them. Click here to download the first beta version of Nokia’s Ovi SDK. More presentations from Mobile Monday Berlin are coming in the next few days.

Kate Imbach – Skyhook Wireless: Driving mobile revenues (presentation) @ Mobile Monday Berlin

Last week’s Mobile Monday Berlin was all about Location Based Services: How will location drive mobile revenue? The mere existence of maps and location-finding alone won't bring in the money. In her talk, Kate Imbach - director of marketing at event sponsor Skyhook Wireless – explained how location can create new avenues for mobile revenue. In Kate’s view, traditional advertising on mobile is currently just an extension of web advertising and there’s more we can do: „When you take location and use it the same way you do on the web and add it into mobile campaigns you get some cool results. The future of location based ads is a lot of stuff that we haven’t even seen yet. Tying together all kind of information totally changes at how we look at advertising on the mobile. I think it’s still really early but the more location gets tied into it the cooler it gets“. Skyhook's technology uses signals from WiFi hot spots to triangulate and find a person's location. The Boston-based company has pioneered the development of the first hybrid positioning system to fully leverage WiFi, GPS and cell towers. For more information on how developers can make money of apps check out Skyhook’s Developer’s Guide to in-App Advertising.
