While the big labels get afraid of the fundamental changes the Internet and the general technological development causes them, there are some fresh ideas upcoming to revolutionize the music business enabling promising artists to get enough money to release their own album. Pim Betist, co-founder of sellaband.com, explains how anybody can become a micro-investor and fund new talents. Very frankly, Pim provides us with insights about the business model behind, which also entailed some criticisms.

The idea sounds simple, find 5.000 believers who buy one or more shares for $10 each. Once you reached $50.000 you will be the lucky one to get you album produced. The success of sellaband is impressing, 14 artists already reached the required $50.000 and have their albums produced, 12 more artists are funded and are on the way of album production. As sellaband takes an transaction fee for any money purchased and gets the interests of the stored money which is waiting to hit the $50.000 you can get an idea about the profitability of that business model. That also caught the attention of investors and that is maybe why sellabend got its $5 Million funding by Prime Technology Ventures for expanding in the US.

So it is no surprise, that there are lots of competitors on the market which also want to have a peace of the cake: forMyBand is a German variation of the same idea, at slicethepie the single investments start at $5. Justaloud.com and talentarena.de have a different approach but also enable independent music and artists to fame, both are based in Germany.
A similar concept but for independent films offers indie maverick.

Also established bands use their fans to receive a pre-financing. The veteran U.K. progressive rock band Marillion could raise $725.000 by selling deluxe versions and gifts related to their new album like going to the studio with them and participating in the recording. That might also be a very cost-effective sales channel for the musicians because as their audience pays in advance they will save a lot of money for marketing and distribution.

Ever dreamed about publishing your own book and becoming a famous author? It’s much easier as you think – at least the part about publishing the book… Just use BLURB with its easy to use publishing software. To learn more about that idea, have a look at the interview with Eileen Gittins, realized at PICNINC conference Amsterdam, Netherlands:

The idea of self publishing on demand is not new, there are several other competitors offering more or less similar products such as amazons BOOKSURGE, LULU, MYPHOTOBOOK and BOD. The two last are more focused on the German market.

Price: Looking at the price the winners would be LULU and BOD, they offer the best prices of all four. BOD tops it by offering great discounts depending on the quantity of ordered books.
Quality: Coming to the quality, that is hard too judge, I’ve seen books of all four and they looked just fine. Maybe LULU failed a little. Question must be more how easy it would be to create the book through the publishing process.
Handling: BLURB and MYPHOTOBOOK offer a special software which you can download for free. At LULU and BOD you have to create your book online or upload a file.
Options and services around: If you want to keep it simple having as main interest to publish a beautiful book for yourself, your family and friends or business partners in great quality you will be fine with BLURB and MYPHOTOBOOK which focus on an easy handling. If you are more interested in becoming an author and selling your book through established distribution channels like amazon you should choose LULU or even better BOD, because BOD even offers more publishing services like providing ISBN’s, professional lectorate or layout. LULU and BOD also offer a much wider range of book formats.
Specials: I liked especially the idea of the BLOGBOOK by BLURB. They have a software which imports and maps your blog text, images, comments, and links into professionally designed page layouts. Supporting blogging platforms like Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad and WordPress. After import you can customize and edit your BLOGBOOK as little or as much as you like.

With lots of free time he decided to set up something with charity but with an entrepreneurial and fun approach. Social entrepreneurship is no new thing, it always existed. Social entrepreneurs recognize social problems and use entrepreneurial principles to organize, create, and manage a venture to make social change. Success for them is related to the impact they have on society. That is different to business entrepreneurs who typically measure performance in profit and return. (source of defintion: wikipedia)

But more or less new is, that there is a big movement of social entrepreneurs using the Internet, digital media or web2.0 mechanisms to let the big change happen. One of the most famous examples is the US-based kiva.org founded in November 2005, enabling micro loans for entrepreneurs all over the world through an Internet based platform where anybody can participate by contributing as little as 25$. Being enormously featured through press and media such as CNN and BBC, or through personalities and politicians such as Bill Clinton, kiva could raise more than impressively 45mill$ for more than 63.000 loans so far. Seth Godin already called it in 2005 “…a great first step in opening up bottlenecks.” And Guy Kawasaki mentions six lessons which any entrepreneur can learn from the kiva phenomenon. So take your courage and change the world!

It works on your backend and suggests related web material based on what you write. Learn more about zemanta by watching the following video:

The pros and cons of zemanta have been widely discussed in the blogosphere.
As the discussion about zemanta is quite controvers, I decided to try it out myself, fascinated by the idea that it could make blogging even easier. My first impressions about the tool go in line with the thoughts of the other bloggers linked to above.

Making tags-adding easy and getting new suggestions for possible tags.
With a growing database would be a rich resource for additional content.
Beeing able to easily create backlinks by personalizing the resources with feeds from do-follow-blogs.
Can be helpful for SEO and SEM.

Inserting an image is not as easy as it could be, because it goes always on the top and not to the point where you want it by pointing the cursor.
The related links offered are mainly links to wordpress, which is completely un-useful at least for me.
The related articles provided are quit old and mostly do not fit to the content.
The pictures provided have to be filtered to get at least somehow useful results, but even though there is just a small number of resources.

So my impression till now: zemanta could become a very useful and powerful tool helping bloggers creating and spreading content faster – but it is not yet.

At the picnic conference last week in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Nico Luchsinger and Antoine Verdon told me about their idea to set up an own conference which is focusing especially on young talents under 30. The first event will take place in 2009 in Zürich and will have INNOVATION as central theme. If you want to know more about the sandbox conference and what there will be different compared to other conferences and barcamps, just have a look on the video.

The two ambitious co-founders of the sandbox-network are themselves still very young, both 25.
For more information about Nico Luchsinger you can check out his professional profile on the sandbox-network site. There you find links to his facebook profile and his twitter account. Additionally you can go to his personal blog written in German. Nico also works as a journalist and has done several interviews with swiss startups.
For more information about Antoine Verdon also have a look on his profile on the sandbox-network site. There you find links to his facebook and xing accounts and you can also decide to follow him on twitter.

They have also set up an own facebook site for their sandbox-network. The group already has more than 430 members, which illustrates the already existing bigger interest for their conference. And of course they do have a company blog. A German presentation of their idea you can find here.

Nabaztag is the Armenian word for rabbit, there is a special Nabazblog telling for example that there is now also a black Nabaztag version available. The little cute rabbit has a wide range of functionalities for example he can update you about the twitter status of your friends.
Mir:ror or mirror, the new product of violet, is a USB-pluggable RFID reader which is able to connect everything you own. Making it possible that a tagged umbrella launches the weather forecast if you hold it next to the mirror. See here, here and there for reviews about that new product.
